On this picture L.Stejneger reconstructed the scenery where "Steller makes first measurement of a sea cow, Bering Island, July 12, 1742 (the date and measurements are given in his 'De bestiis marinis', pp. 294-296)."

1882/83 Stejneger, famous Norwegian-American Zoologist^*)1851–1943, spent almost 2 years on Bering-Island. He was fascinated by Steller's life and work and became his main biographer.
